On sportswear’s risk manager Devanshu Agarwal shares his thoughts on unauthorized resellers who have tried to target On’s limited edition collaborations with high-end brands such as Loewe. “Those are very limited in numbers, so they pretty much get sold out as soon as they go on,” he says. “They’re a target for payment fraud, but also reselling. It ends up impacting our customer experience when a legitimate customer cannot purchase a Loewe, versus some reseller or a bot placing 20 Loewe shoe orders and then reselling it on the third-party marketplace.”
Over the past year, unauthorized reseller orders have seen a troubling rise — increasing in 2024 by double-digit percentages every month compared to a year ago. The year-over-year increase in reseller abuse peaked in April, rising 64% over April 2023 and remained as high as up 50% in August. Overall for 2024 so far, reseller abuse — identified by repeated purchases using the same digital identifiers within a single day — is up an average of 26% year-over-year.
